American reality TV personality and entrepreneur Donald Trump has called South Africa “a total and very dangerous mess.” The “comb-over” tycoon took to Twitter to deliver the scathing comments after foreign nationals in some parts of South Africa were attacked. Violence erupted in the Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces in the country, where businesses owned by foreigners were burnt and looted. Donald Trump Tweeted: “As I’ve long been saying, South Africa is a total- and very dangerous- mess. Just watch the evening news (when not talking weather).
Donald Trump is not really my favorite person, nor could I say he is an authority on South African politics, but it’s hard to disagree with him in light of the recent xenophobic attacks that left seven people dead and thousands misplaced. It’s not just the xenophobic attacks. A mostly corrupt government, violence against women and children, robberies, and high unemployment all contribute to an inclination to agree with Trump. Over a period of two weeks my business premises were broken into and looted, twice! Two months before that the security guard at the shop next door was murdered. It’s hard to remain patriotic when all of these atrocities are happening.
South Africa will be celebrating Freedom Day on April 27. It was on this day in 1994 when the country held its first democratic elections after facing the beast that was apartheid and emerged victorious. There xenophobic attacks have certainly put a damper on celebrations of this historic day. Maybe South Africans need to be reminded just how this freedom was won, with the help of the rest of Africa. There should be some medium to educate South Africans on the role played by other African countries in our struggle for freedom. The sooner the better!
