If you needed any more evidence that the world has truly shrunk into a global village, here it is. One of East Africa’s hottest pop artists has crossed the continent and then crossed the Atlantic to collaborate with an American superstar. It is beyond doubt that Diamond Platnumz has taken Tanzania’s unique Bongo Flava music to the next level, working with some of Africa’s biggest stars to create ginormous hits like ‘Kidogo’ and ‘Number One’. Along the way the 27 year-old has scooped up a succession of awards from numerous Channel O Music Video Awards to MTV Europe Music Awards. He even has a couple of BET Award nominations to his name.
This Friday, Diamond added another feather to his cap by becoming the first ever East African to be signed to Universal Music Group. The first project this new partnership would undertake would be to create a music video for a collaborative song Diamond Platnumz did with Ne-Yo back in 2015 titled ‘Marry You’. Recorded in Nairobi, Kenya, it is a product of the friendship the two artists struck after meeting at the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards in Durban, South Africa. This catchy wedding tune must have by now made it into many a ceremony.
To show how much they believe in the Tanzanian’s potential, UMG flew him to Johannesburg and Los Angeles to make the video. The visual opens with the two crooners cruising around the streets of L.A. in a drop-top Phantom. Along the way they happen on a pair of beauties, one of whom sparks of romantic fantasies in Diamond’s head. Watch the rest of the story as it unfolds below.
