Good news for all old-school hip hop fans; De La Soul have a new project in the works. And it won’t be long in coming; ‘And The Anonymous Nobody…’ drops August 26, making it the first album the Long Island collective have released in four years. After they set the industry ablaze in the 90s alongside groups like Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest, Posdnuos, Maseo and Dave have taken a back seat. But they’ve never left; they’ve released a handful of albums and EPs and put their hands into several collaborative projects. And now it appears they’re out to take the game back over again, or at least remind it what it’s been missing. If you’ve not been checking for De La in the past, now is a good time to jump on the bandwagon coz And The Anonymous Nobody has all the makings of a classic. We know this from the two tracks made available so far. The first is the groovy, jazzy ‘Trainwreck’ which rides on a deliciously thick bass line.
The second is ‘Pain’ which serves as a single for the new album and is just as addictive a listen as Trainwreck. From the get-go you won’t be able to resist nodding your head to the soulful instrumental. Smooth, witty rhymes only double the pleasure and the emergence of West Coast rap god Snoop Dogg makes the track compulsory listening for anyone who claims to have a thing for rap. If you’re like me and can’t wait to indulge in the new De La LP, pre-order And The Anonymous Nobody… and put these two hot tracks on repeat.
