When’s the last time you heard from Danny Brown? The Detroit rapper seems to have been on a sort of unannounced hiatus ever since he dropped ‘Old’ back in 2013. His verse on Eminem’s ‘Detroit Vs. Everybody’ back in November 2014 must have been the last thing Danny put on wax. At least until he began work on his new album which he recently revealed in an Instagram post was in its finishing stages. The first-fruits of the as yet untitled project is ‘When It Rain’, a feisty cut crafted with the help of long-term collaborator Paul White and released on Warp Records. The producer has chiseled out a frenetic, percussion-drenched instrumental on which Danny sounds all too happy to let loose on, having been away so long.
And the video, directed by Mimi Cave, reflects the restlessness in the MC’s urgent rhymes. It is a mash up of clips shot in different parts of Brown’s hometown, mostly of youths busting moves out in the open. The video winds up with a shot of Brown spitting in front of a brick house surrounded by his crew. If we can expect more of this raw energy in the highly anticipated sophomore, then bring it on.
