Convicted rapist Ariel Castro was found dead in his cell yesterday, reports say. Prison officers entered the cell in which Castro was placed in ‘protective custody’ to find the 53 year-old former school bus driver hangng in an apparent suicide. Attempts to resuscitate Castro proved futile and he was declared dead about an hour later at 10.52pm. The gravity of Castro’s crimes meant that he had to be confined in a cell alone with prison staff checking up on him every half an hour. Apparently Castro took advantage of one of these intervals while the guards were away to end his own life.
Now Castro’s lawyer is pointing a finger at the authorities for denying his deceased client get the psychological assistance he needed while in prison. During his sentencing on 1st of August, Castro told the court that he was sick and had an addiction and that he was no monster. The Cleveland prison’s spokesperson, on the prison’s part said that a ‘thorough review’ of the incident is ongoing. Questions are also being raised about why the prisoner wasn’t on suicide watch despite the fact that a suicide note and confession were found in Castro’s residence after he was sentenced.
However, few tears will probably be shed for a man who pleaded guilty to charges of kidnapping two teenage girls and another in her early twenties and holding them forcefully over 11 years, raping them systematically. His actions landed him life imprisonment without parole plus 1,000 years, a sentence he had barely served a month of.
