While their chosen monicker can create the impression of a weathered, time-tested metal outfit peopled by a collection of guitar-slinging, beer-gutted, grey-bearded men in their fifties, Savages is none of those things. It is a London-based post-punk band formed just four years ago when Gemma Thompson and Camille Berthomier, A.K.A Jehnny Beth, met. Up to that point the pair were part of John & Jehn, an art-pop act fronted by Jehnny and her partner. But come October 2011, Gemma and Jehnny started a new venture to fulfill a vision the latter had for a “solid”, “indestructible” band, one the two had been discussing for about a year. Drummer Fay and bassist Ayse Hassan are the remaining components of the all-female band.
Their defiant debut album ‘Silence Yourself’, won Savages admirers all over Europe and even across the pond. The dark, furious single ‘Husbands’ was especially well received and was even used in the soundtrack of sci-fi film ‘Ex Machina’. Now the band wants to go one better with their upcoming sophomore release ‘Adore Life’ which is scheduled for release in January next year. The intention to go all out is evident in the upcoming album’s lead single ‘The Answer’ for which they Savages has just released a video. In the series of shaky close-ups of the band, instruments and their frenetic audience is an intense energy that pulls you in and makes you want to join in the sweaty moshing.
