This April late-blooming soul/funk star Charles Bradley dropped his third studio album, ‘Changes‘, a project that marked the passing away of his mother. The emotion of that moment was captured in the video for the album title track. Up till now that was the only visual from Changes. ‘Good To Be Back Home’ now also has a video of its own and it’s a black-and-white collage of nostalgic images imagined and stitched together by Aaron Swartz.
It shows a reminiscent Charles wandering through his hometown in Brooklyn, a place he spent a good part of his childhood before embarking on an epic journey across the country. Interwoven into shots oftree-lined streets, apartment blocks, a pet parrot and a fluffy pup are gripping images of Charles on stage working his magic backed by a full band. You can see from the clips how much of his heart and soul Bradley pours into his live shows, and how much he loves his fans, and how much they adore him. Even so you get a sense of dissatisfaction from his facial expression. I guess that’s what he means when he says “America has been bittersweet to me”.
If you want to experience that energy of Charles’ live gigs, you’re just in time as he’ll be getting back to the road this Friday starting in Hamilton, Canada. Check out the rest of his North America and Europe schedule here.
