Cashavelly Morrison’s foray into music started on the opposite end of the spectrum. From her childhood, the native West Virginian’s first love was dancing, a field she would end up embracing as a profession. However, tragedy struck one day when she suffered a serious spinal injury which rendered her practically immobile for 6 months. It was during this period of misfortune that the transformation from Cashavelly the dancer to Cashavelly the singer-songwriter happened. She studied writing, attaining her Master’s degree in the artform, as well as taught herself the guitar. Later, Ryan MacLeod, her classically trained husband, joined her fledgling band, lending the music of his Southern upbringing to its sound.
October 2015 saw the indie band release its debut album, ‘The Kingdom Belongs to a Child‘. The project drew praise from pundits who termed it “thoughtful, delicate and elegant”. The lush instrumentation, rooted in Americana music, and Cashavelly’s meek, yet powerful vocals made for an intoxicating listen that gave the music lover plenty to chew on. ‘Iodine’, one of the album’s standout tracks, offers a glimpse into the depth of thought that led to the creation of The Kingdom Belongs to a Child. Inspired by the Michael Brown incident that sparked a wave of protests across the country, it agonizes with mothers who have their sons suddenly snatched from them by reckless violence.
In Cashavelly’s own words: “Sitting at home with my own son, safely witnessing these events from afar, I felt that remaining silent made me complicit in his death. I wrote the song to honor the strength of all mothers who lose their children to violence.”
Now Cashavelly has added powerful imagery to the already poignant music with a new video that stars dancer Dominica Green. Daintily prancing about alone in a house, Green portrays the emptiness and pain borne by grieving mothers. Her movements are brilliantly captured by filmmaker S. Cagney Gentry from the beginning when they are laden with despair to the end where they are empowered by the pursuit of justice.
