There was a time when the hearts of all teenagers on this marble couldn’t get enough of boy bands. You think One Direction is the ish? Then “you know nothing John Snow.” From 98 Degrees and New Kids on the Block to N’SYNC and Westlife, and no matter how much they deny it now, everyone old enough to have had sex-appeal-crushing acne at the time loved each and every one of those boy bands. There was a time when I would have absolutely, totally, unequivocally died dead if I had run into the Backstreet Boys. Seven gods honest I think I still would.
With over 130 million albums sold worldwide, they are the best-selling boy band in music history, the only group since Sade, yes Sade, to release seven consecutive albums in the top 10 of Billboard Top 200, they have performed to sold-out arenas across the world and shared the stage with the likes of Sting and Elton John. There are also the seven Grammy nominations. I had a bit of a nostalgic moment as I watched ‘Magic Mike XXL,’ when Joe Manganiello danced for that convenience store cashier with BSB’s ‘I Want It That Way’ playing in the background.
I had this huge grin on my face, reminded of a time when rocks were soft and animals could talk. I will never look at a bag of Cheetos the same way again. I’m sure people will still be YouTubing that scene when aliens finally take over the world. The Backstreet Boys’ two-decade career has been a marvel to watch. Formed in Orlando, Florida in 1993, the group has stood the test of time, this despite how hard it can be for artists to stay relevant.
And even through disagreements with record labels, and other members pursuing solo interests, BSB is still here and still performing all over the world. The group has another album in the works, is starring in zombie movies, and has just scored a test residency in Las Vegas which will begin January 2017. Their last effort, ‘In a World Like This,’ debuted at Number 5 on Billboard 200, so it looks like we’ll still be listening to BSB when the apocalypse hits.
