When South African hip hop finds its voice, you can rest assured that you will be in for a treat. Local hip hop artists have had a hard time proving themselves in a genre that’s up against popular genres like House music and Kwaito. But with OkMalumKoolKat, South African hip hop has definitely found its voice.
Smiso “OkMalumKoolKat” Zwane is a hip hop artist born on July 27, 1983. He is a rapper and half of the electronic/rap duo Dirty Paraffin-how he comes with these wacky names is beyond me. He gained fame in Europe in 2012 with the release of “Sebenza,” on which he collaborated with UK production duo LV.

The video for “Holy Oxygen” was shot in an abandoned sewage farm near Soweto, one of South Africa’s biggest townships. It’s also shot in a eucalyptus forest, which has nothing to do with any character from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise but is in fact a bunch of flowering trees, as well as in a mine dump. The end result is as epic as you would expect. Definitely one of his best yet!
