Until recently, talented South African artist Nonku Phiri has been working as an illustrator, graphic designer, and art director. But because the music gods are an extremely nice group of supernatural beings, Phiri recently took the plunge and decided to focus a bulk of her fantastic creative output on making music. She has since collaborated with the crème of the crop in South African producers and rappers including Jack Parow, Reason, OkMalumKoolKat, and Crazy White Boy.
Phiri is a multi-talented and versatile artist who isn’t afraid to explore every creative gene in her anatomy. This has led to a number of alter egos that could easily give “Sasha Fierce” a run for her money. She has gone by the names Cleopatra and Jung Freud because why the hell not. The latter serves as her rap moniker and she landed her pipes to various other talented artists as Jung Freud, including PHFat’s ‘Lights Out.”
“Things We Do on the Weekend” is her 2015 debut single. It’s a sultry tale set to hazy beats. The track is based on a modern romance and is a “narrative of a girl going through the motions of courtship.” Phiri will soon be releasing her first solo project, and no doubt it will be awesome.
