Having reminded the world just how bad they still are with their 2012 collab album ‘Plug 1 & Plug 2 Present…First Serve’, NYC alternative hip hop pioneers De La Soul are back with what promises to be a killer recording. For what will be their ninth studio album the legendary trio opted to enlist the help of their fans on Kickstarter. So eager were De La Soul’s followers to see the completion of the collective’s latest project that their campaign overshot its target by more than $300,000. There are still 10 days of the campaign left if you’d like to add to the group’s eight thousand backers.
With recording still ongoing in an Atlanta studio, Kelvin Mercer, David Jolicoeur and Vincent Mason have found time to make this gem of a track that they assure fans won’t be on the new album. “But it is an indication of good music to come…a little appetizer until we complete the main course,” a statement they released says. If this is just the appetizer I would advise you not to eat breakfast the day you get your copy of that CD. ‘God It’ sounds and smells like a rap classic, delivered effortlessly by masters of the game. Clever rhymes over jazzy boom-bap with no seasoning; wouldn’t have it any other way. Lacing the hook is the distinctive voice of Nasir Jones. Teasers just don’t come any tastier!
