It’s been four long years since we heard new material from the gorgeous Alicia Keys. In that time span the native New Yorker gave birth to her second child and saw her first one earn production credits on Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Untitled Unmastered’ LP. Her last release was 2012’s ‘Girl on Fire’ which featured that blazing duet with Maxwell ‘Fire We Make‘, one of the greatest R&B productions I’ve heard in recent times. And that does seem like a hell of a long time ago so it’s about time Miss Keys returned to rekindle that boyhood crush many of us fell victim to.
This new Alicia is unlike anything we’ve heard from the 35 year-old before; an Alicia unafraid to breach the boundaries of her soul-R&B comfort zone in search of a more danceable sound. There are still the trademark keys, but there’s a whole lot more percussion and faint but distinct EDM embellishments, enough to drive you to the dancefloor. In her lyrics she describes a love that can love her despite her flaws; a love that has known her since they “were young and ain’t had no vows”. Few artists can create something so emotionally deep and rhythmic at the same time.
All that’s left now is to watch Alicia perform the song live, which she will do on May 7 when she returns to Saturday Night Live. Soccer fans like yours truly will get to see her do it again during the UEFA Champions League Final opening ceremony in Milan on May 28.
