I know this is going to sound crazy but this will be the first time I actually listen to a Miguel product. I like the music that he makes that make it to the radio but how will I feel about a whole project.
1. a beautiful exit
This is a wondrous and deeply imaginative intro for what I’m now anticipating as a great album. This song managed to make me smile. I added it to my make me feel happy playlist. What a way to start an album. And it has a great message. Produced By Miguel and Happy Perez The beat is well structured and very pleasant.
This song is a mixture of the current with a bit of funk produced by a whole lot of people including Flippa, Oakwud, Miguel, Steve Mostyn, and Andrew “Pop” Wansel. It actually fits in that genre. The guitar gives it a soft rock vibe too. Will all the songs on this album make it in a playlist on my spotify library. I started a “let’s get funky” playlist because of this song
3. the valley
He sings on really strange beats. His voice is delightful though so the strange beats are almost cancelled out by the sound of his vocals. I’m not sure how to feel about this song but nearing the end of the song there is a part of the song that reminds me of Final Fantasy. I like subtle changes in music like that. Him harmonizing in the back helped sell this song too. The song is him basically suggesting making a pornographic film. The valley he speaks of could be referencing the San Fernando Valley which is the pioneering region for producing adult films.
Heard this song earlier. Its awesome. Its already in my intimate playlist. I don’t even need to listen to it but I will because of how much I love this song. Produced by Miguel himself. Wale’s verse is stripped from it and a new verse from Miguel takes it’s place. But It’s so just so good.
A song about how bad girls love Niggas With Attitude. Another weird beat. Let’s see how his voice does. The addition of the guitar and synth add more to the beat. I also notice that something gets added to the beat after about 16 bars I believe. Maybe I’m wrong. I swear his singing ability is the saving grace of this album without it this album would be the target of me just bashing the artist. I like it.
The beat sound like a chromeo song Produced By Miguel and Happy Perez. Chromeo bases their music on old school, thinking of it this whole album has an old school element added to it. Maybe I’m wrong but I thing I heard a tigers roar in the song. It sounds cool. He compares love making to the waves in the ocean very clever.”Motion of the Ocean”
7. what’s normal anyway
It kinda touches on something that logic, childish gambino, and drake talked about a lot and that is not fitting in one click and basically stating that being abnormal is his form of normal. Its an emotional track probably one of my favorite tracks on his album. I relate to this song. This song is made to tell you to be yourself and I give it a big thumbs up
8. Hollywood Dreams
This song, Produced by The Fisticuffs and Miguel, had a blues vibe on it. It is really gritty with that hard guitar and drum duo. His voice makes thing song something more than just a blues song as this is him allowing the listener to know that Hollywood dreams can come true.
9. destinado a morir(enter.lewd)
What a name. If you dont understand Spanish it means destined to die. Its a short interlude but effective enough.
Continues after the interlude and how could a song have such a dark title and theme but sound so pleasant. Simple let Miguel sing on it. Produced By Cashmere Cat and BenZel, this beat was great.
I get reminded of Maxwell, babyface, Donnell Jones, and all the great R&B singers of the 90s that had that one song that was played in the bedroom during that moment of positive emotional sexual intensity.
His tracklist is upper or lowercase like he just learned that there is an All caps button on his laptop. This soft rock ballad is good too. The latter half of this album was a mix of good music and good vocals. The former half of this album was strange beats and great vocals. The song could actually be a solid outro but he has one more song after this
13. face the sun
This song features Lenny Kravitz. Talent is on the ultimate volume. In a way this does sound like an ending that is well deserved.
Listening to this album has been an experience. I am completely satisfied with the hour I spent listening to this album. Although some songs are hard to get used to. If you can enjoy a project as a whole this is a great and artistic variation of songs that feels nostalgic to a common listener of music but new for current generation listeners. I can tell that Miguel was influenced by many old school R&B artists and this album is honestly an instant classic.
