Here are some albums in the horizon worth checking out:
Sting – 57th & 9th
Last time we heard Sting on an album, it wasn’t his; it was a joint effort between him and French songstress Mylène on the steamy single ‘Stolen Car’. A year before that he gave us the folksy ‘Last Ship’, an album that was more of an audio movie than a collection of songs. This 2014 LP was the fourth of a series of mellow albums crafted around traditional instruments starting with 2006’s ‘Songs from the Labyrinth’. Now Sting is returning to the familiar rock background that made him and The Police one of the most dominant forces of the 80s. Referring to his upcoming album ‘57th & 9th’, named after the New York studio he’s recording it in, Sting says, “It’s rockier than anything I’ve done in a while.” The album was done almost spontaneously with a group of instrumentalists, songs being written and recorded in situ in one or two takes.
Lady Gaga – Joanne
Similar to Sting, Lady Gaga’s last outing was in the duet format. Her ‘Cheek to Cheek’ album with Tony Bennett was an energetic rehashing of traditional jazz standards, which ended up winning a Grammy. In her latest album, Gaga is reaching back into the past again, but on a more personal level this time. ‘Joanne’ is not just the name of the LP, it’s the name of her aunt; an aunt she shares a middle name and a love for art with. Aunt Joanne passed away in 1974, 12 years before her namesake was born but, according to Gaga, she influenced her niece artistically and even helped her kick a drug habit. You can get better acquainted with Joanne when the album comes out on October 21.
Craig David – Following My Intuition
It’s been 16 years since we first heard British crooner on the Artful Dodger’s hit single ‘Re-Rewind’. And the ladies couldn’t get enough of the strapping 18 year-old with a goatee in his ‘Seven Days’ video. Fans have watched the precocious teenager turn into a global R&B star over the years and now he stands a mature artist with a brand new single. ‘Ain’t Giving Up’ is the name of the new song, an upbeat electro-pop tune done with help from DJ/producer Sigala. It is a prelude to David’s first studio release in six years, ‘Following My Intuition’, which drops September 30. Besides Ain’t Giving Up, this new opus has the slamming collab with Kaytranada ‘Got It Good’ that also features in the Canadian beatsmith’s ’99.9%’ album.
